More about this tour
Experience the best introduction to Split and Croatia with our expert, certified guides who bring over 500 tours worth of experience. Over 1700 years ago, Roman Emperor Diocletian chose the Adriatic coast for his retirement and built a grand palace. Today, that very palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as the heart of Split.
On our guided tour, you'll explore the palace and its surroundings, visit all the main landmarks, uncover hidden treasures known only to locals, and hear fascinating tales from both the past and present. The journey begins at the fountain in Josip Juraj Strossmayer Park, where your introduction to Croatia and Split begins.
The striking Gregory of Nin statue tells the story of Croatia’s turbulent history and its fight to preserve its language and culture—make sure to rub his big toe for good luck! At the Golden Gate, you’ll learn about Diocletian, a peasant who rose to become emperor, and his monumental project: the palace in Split. This structure served as both a military stronghold and imperial residence and remains largely intact. The gates once had a clever design to trap enemy soldiers, making them easy targets for defenders. Step into the past as you stroll along the Cardo and Decumanus streets, exploring Roman architecture. Visit the awe-inspiring Peristyle Square and imagine the emperor greeting his people. Hear stories about Diocletian’s reforms, the division of the Roman Empire, and the persecution of Christians. The St. Domnius Cathedral, once Diocletian’s mausoleum, is now dedicated to one of his victims.
Next, you’ll tour the emperor’s private apartments, starting with the magnificent Vestibule. In the Dining Hall, you’ll discover Roman cuisine and how it differs from modern-day food. Diocletian’s Cellars are perfectly preserved and even served as a filming location for Game of Thrones. The Temple of Jupiter and its Sphinx guardians reflect the cultural and religious changes of the time.
On the Riva promenade, enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and nearby islands while discovering the unexpected connections between Split and the French, neckties, sulfur, and Dalmatian dogs.
Our guides will also share insider tips on the best local food, restaurants, bars, beaches, and islands, helping you plan the perfect vacation in Split and Croatia. Fall in love with Split during this unforgettable tour!
